Throughout his career as a lawyer, a member of the Army Reserves, in the Massachusetts legislature, and for decades on Capitol Hill in both chambers, Senator Ed Markey has refused to compromise his values in his fight to build a commonwealth and country that are fair, just, and equitable for all. In every role, he has never been afraid to disrupt the status quo and has been committed to leading and delivering on the issues that matter the most to the people of Massachusetts—including preventing senseless gun violence.
Protecting the safety and security of Massachusetts’s schools, streets, and communities is of the utmost importance to Senator Markey, who supports commonsense gun safety reforms. His priorities include instituting universal background checks on all firearms sales, banning assault weapons, making gun trafficking a federal crime, implementing a prohibition against high-capacity ammunition magazines, and closing the loopholes surrounding the creation of undetectable, plastic guns. For this reason, Senator Markey has authored lifesaving legislation designed to take action—like the Making America Safe and Secure (MASS) Act, which would incentivize states to adopt gun licensing standards similar to those proven effective in Massachusetts, and the 3D Printed Gun Safety Act, which would ban the online posting of 3D printable gun blueprints. Senator Markey’s Keeping Gun Dealers Honest Act would also strengthen accountability measures for irresponsible gun dealers and provide the ATF with additional resources for enforcement.
While we’ve made progress in the fight to save lives in recent years, there is still too much chaos and dysfunction in Congress preventing the passage of the additional lifesaving measures voters are demanding across the country. It’s time to reestablish a gun safety majority in DC that will listen to their voices and get the job done—and Senator Ed Markey will be a vital champion in that fight. We must send him back to the US Senate once again, where we know he’ll never tire in his work to build a safer Bay State for the next generation.
