Throughout her career, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins has proven that she knows how to get things done and bring people together on some of the toughest issues facing South Florida families—from expanding access to lifesaving services that Miami residents rely on to ending the epidemic of gun violence that has claimed too many lives in her community. As mayor, she’ll lead her city with courage and conviction, and always put the needs of her constituents first.
Commissioner Higgins understands that public safety must be a top concern for Miami’s next mayor, and if elected, she’ll bring an extensive record of advocacy on the issue of gun violence prevention to office. As a longtime volunteer with Moms Demand Action and as a strong partner in GIFFORDS’s work to build safer communities across the Sunshine State, she’s spent years helping to mobilize Floridians around the need to both support survivors of gun violence coping with tragedy and to bolster the state’s laws to prevent every day gun violence and the mass tragedies that have shaken so many communities to their core. As a county commissioner, she helped fund and launch Miami-Dade’s Group Violence Intervention program—a nationally recognized model that has proven to reduce shootings and homicides that she had also personally championed as a community member before she was even elected. At the county level, Commissioner Higgins also supported numerous community-based violence prevention strategies like investing in youth employment programs, funding the creation of safe community spaces, improving street lighting, and initiatives that were focused on building trust between police and residents in neighborhoods most affected by gun violence.
After years of turbulence, Miami residents deserve a leader with a clear vision for their city who is focused on their needs—someone who wants to get things done and make lives better for every resident, no matter where they live.
