As a former Navy commander and member of Congress, former Representative Elaine Luria has always been guided by the oaths she’s taken to protect the American people and stepped up to answer the call of duty when the moment demanded it. Now, as our country is reeling from the chaos in Washington fomented by Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress, Representative Luria is doing so once again and making a comeback bid in one of the most competitive districts in the country because there’s too much at stake to sit on the sidelines as our communities, our gun laws, and our democracy are under attack.
During her two terms in the US House, Representative Luria was a strong champion for lifesaving gun safety measures that were designed to save lives and respect the Second Amendment rights of responsible Virginians to own and use firearms. In particular, she supported legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales, prohibit the possession or transfer of large-capacity magazines, and allow family members and law enforcement officers to petition a judge to keep firearms out of the hands of those determined to be a danger to themselves or others. For Congresswoman Luria, each of these policies took on particular urgency after the mass shooting in Virginia Beach in May 2019, and she worked to honor the lives of the 12 Virginians lost in her congressional district that day every time she set foot on Capitol Hill. In 2022, Representative Luria helped make history by joining colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the first major gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This landmark bill made gun trafficking and straw purchasing federal crimes, disarmed domestic abusers, provided funding to states to implement extreme risk protection order laws, and marked the largest investment in community violence intervention programs in American history.
In 2018, Representative Elaine Luria helped Democrats flip the House and win a gun safety majority that was able to pass sensible legislation and lifesaving reforms for the first time in years—and in 2026, she is going to be a crucial part of repeating this feat as champions like her fight to retake the chamber. When she wins and is once again leading the way on this issue in a new majority, we know that every Virginia family will be able to rest easier knowing they have one of the strongest champions for a safer future fighting on their behalf.
