Eli Savit has dedicated his career to fighting for people—from his time serving as a public school teacher specializing in special education and American history, to clerking on the United States Supreme Court for Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to serving as senior legal counsel for the city of Detroit, and most recently as the elected prosecuting attorney for Washtenaw County. Now, Savit is running for attorney general to continue this important service—and he’s determined to work to bolster public safety by not just prosecuting serious crime, but preventing it from happening in the first place.
In his current role, Savit has proven himself to be a strong gun safety champion who is leading the effort on the ground in the community where he was born and raised to build a safer future for every Michigander. In particular, as a prosecutor, Savit has worked alongside the state legislature to enact commonsense gun safety measures locally, specifically advocating for the passage of lifesaving policies like universal background checks and safe storage requirements. He has also secured grants to launch multiple gun violence prevention efforts in Washtenaw County, including the Stand Against Firearms Endangerment (SAFE) Initiative, which partners with community and school groups to educate the public on Michigan’s red flag laws and their connection to preventing intimate partner violence.
With so much on the line this fall, it’s imperative that voters across the country mobilize to elect committed gun safety advocates to fight for a safer future as attorneys general this fall—starting with Savit in Michigan. Elections in the Great Lake State are always close, and we cannot risk moving backwards, especially after lawmakers at the state level achieved so much progress on this issue in recent years. Michiganders deserve leaders like Eli Savit fighting to uphold these measures in court and working every day to keep communities from Detroit to Kalamazoo safe as the state’s next chief law enforcement official. We know that with him leading the way, a future free from senseless shootings will finally be within reach.
