Eric Sorensen

US House Illinois — 17th District Democrat
Incumbent2026
For over two decades, Congressman Eric Sorensen served his community as a local meteorologist and newscaster—helping to keep the people of northwest and central Illinois safe by informing them of the news of the day. After 22 years on air, Congressman Sorensen ran for the US House in one of the closest races in the country to help bolster public safety in a different way: by working to pass commonsense gun violence prevention measures at the national level. And he’s won decisively in every cycle since.

Gun safety is a personal issue for Representative Sorensen. On Valentine’s Day in 2008, he co-anchored breaking news coverage of a devastating mass shooting at his alma mater, Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He will never forget the details of that day and the sadness that lingered in his community for the days, weeks, and months to follow. In Congress, he has fought to ensure that no other community will ever have to feel that pain again by cosponsoring commonsense gun safety legislation like measures to require a background check for every firearm sale, ban the sale of assault weapons, and strengthen safe storage requirements nationally. Congressman Sorensen has also pushed back against attempts to cut off needed funding for gun violence research, which he views as being crucial to understanding the scope of our country’s epidemic of violence.

With so much on the line this fall, it’s imperative that Illinois voters continue to support strong gun safety champions like Congressman Eric Sorensen for reelection. With him continuing to lead the way on this issue in a new gun safety majority, a better future free from senseless violence for the next generation is possible.

We are proud to endorse Eric Sorensen for the US House of Representatives.
