For over two decades, Eric Sorensen has served his community as a local meteorologist and newscaster—helping to keep the people of Northwest and Central Illinois safe by informing them of the news of the day. After 22 years on air, Sorensen is now running for Congress to help bolster public safety in a different way: this time by working to pass commonsense gun violence prevention measures at the national level.
Gun safety is a personal issue for Sorensen. On Valentine’s Day of 2008, he co-anchored breaking news coverage of a devastating mass shooting at his alma mater, Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. He will never forget the details of that day and the sadness that lingered in his community for the days, weeks, and months to follow. In Congress, he will fight to ensure that no other community will ever have to feel that pain again by enacting commonsense gun safety reforms. Sorensen also understands that there is no one solution to ending gun violence, and he will support a multipronged approach to this issue if elected that will include allocating funds for crucial community violence intervention programs and additional research into the root causes of gun violence.
Democrats have held this district for the last decade, and we must make sure that Illinoisans from Peoria to Rockford continue to have a gun safety champion speaking on their behalf come 2023. Voters must mobilize like never before to send Eric Sorensen to Capitol Hill. With him leading the way, a safer future without the threat of gun violence is possible.
