Shaped by the service of his parents, a teacher and nurse, Representative Herb Conaway knew from a young age he wanted to serve his community. As a US Air Force veteran, physician, clinical professor, state legislator, and now member of Congress, he’s done just that. Throughout every chapter of his public service, Representative Conaway has approached leadership with a simple belief: government has a responsibility to protect people and help them thrive. That commitment has made him a steadfast advocate for reducing gun violence and building safer communities across New Jersey and the nation.
Throughout his career in public office, Representative Conaway has championed commonsense gun safety measures that save lives while respecting responsible gun ownership. During his time in the New Jersey legislature, he helped advance comprehensive background checks, measures to prevent firearms from falling into the hands of individuals who pose a danger to themselves or others, and investments in mental health services and support for survivors of gun violence. Since being elected to Congress, he has continued that work by supporting legislation such as the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2025 and Ethan’s Law, which would establish federal safe storage requirements to help prevent unintentional shootings and firearm tragedies involving children. Representative Conaway also supports efforts to address the growing threat posed by untraceable ghost guns and believes Congress must continue working toward evidence-based solutions that reduce gun violence in all its forms.
As a physician and veteran, Representative Conaway understands that gun violence is both a public safety issue and a public health crisis. In his role on the House Armed Services Committee and as Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, he has been a strong advocate for veterans’ mental health and suicide prevention. With firearm suicide accounting for a disproportionate number of veteran deaths, he remains committed to ensuring veterans have access to the care, support, and resources they need while continuing to highlight the broader impact of gun violence on families and communities across the country.
