State Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin is a mother, engineer, and community leader with two decades of leadership in her community. Her career in public service began on the Thousand Oaks City Council in 2004, where she was a strong advocate for the preservation of open space and responsible development while working tirelessly to ensure that families had a safe community. In 2014, she was elected to represent California’s Forty-Fourth Assembly District and throughout her tenure in the California legislature, Assemblywoman Irwin has consistently supported gun violence prevention measures, including legislation aimed at strengthening firearm restrictions and enforcement following mass shootings in her district. At every turn, she demonstrates that it is possible to work across party lines to help create jobs, balance our local and state budgets, and pass legislation to keep our communities safe from gun violence. If elected, she’s determined to continue that work in Washington DC.
In 2018, Assemblywoman Irwin’s community was rocked by the Borderline mass shooting in Thousand Oaks. She immediately took action and authored legislation to strengthen California’s gun violence restraining order (GVRO) law by allowing restraining orders to last up to five years and requiring law enforcement agencies to adopt policies for using GVROs. She has supported law enforcement and victims by securing $3 million in state funding to help local law enforcement recover firearms from individuals prohibited from possessing them through California’s Armed and Prohibited Persons System (APPS), which identifies people who have become legally barred from owning firearms. In Congress, she will champion effective gun violence prevention policies like red flag laws and safe storage measures nationwide.
California’s Twenty-Sixth District is one of over 50 open races for the US House of Representatives this fall, and holding this seat is an important step in reestablishing a gun safety majority that will prioritize public safety. Now more than ever, we need a leader like Assemblywoman Irwin to fight for all of us in Washington DC. With her in Congress, we can continue our fight for a future safe from gun violence.
