Representative Jared Moskowitz knows the deep pain that gun violence can inflict on a community. In February 2018, his hometown of Parkland, Florida, became the site of one of the deadliest school shootings in modern American history when 17 students and staff were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
At the time, Representative Moskowitz served his community in the Florida House of Representatives, and he worked with the families of victims to pass the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act into law. This comprehensive gun violence prevention, school safety, and mental health package—which is named for Representative Moskowitz’s alma mater—raised the age to buy a gun from 18 to 21, established a three-day waiting period for all gun purchases, expanded background checks, banned bump stocks, and created extreme risk protection order laws that empower law enforcement to take guns away from especially dangerous individuals. Motivated by a desire to keep Floridian communities safe in the wake of this tragedy, Representative Moskowitz went on to assume the role of director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management in 2019, and later won election to a seat on the Broward County Commission in 2022.
Since he was elected to Congress in 2022, Representative Moskowitz has taken his fight for safer communities to new heights and has become one of the foremost gun safety champions on the Judiciary Committee and in the entirety of the US House. In office, he’s introduced and cosponsored several meaningful pieces of legislation to curb our country’s epidemic of violence, including the 3D Printed Gun Safety Act, which would prevent the manufacturing of ghost guns; the EAGLES Act, which would reauthorize and expand the National Threat Assessment Center program and add safety initiatives to prevent school violence; and Jaime’s Law, which would require instant background checks to prevent criminals from illegally purchasing ammunition.
This year, Republicans in Florida enacted new, gerrymandered maps in a bid to seize power in congressional districts across Florida — putting the seats of some of our foremost gun safety champions like Representative Moskowitz at risk. This year more than ever, voters must mobilize in record numbers to overcome these brazen power grabs and ensure he’s sent back to Washington DC. With Representative Jared Moskowitz continuing to help to lead the way in Congress, we know that Floridians will always have a fighter in their corner pushing to make sure that communities across the country will never again have to endure the same pain felt in Parkland.
