For Michigan State Senator Jeremy Moss, Oakland County is where everything began—it’s where he grew up, was educated, and first developed an early passion for serving the communities that shaped him. Having worked in multiple capacities in state government, from a barrier-breaking tenure in the Michigan House to his time as Senate President Pro Tempore, Senator Moss has built a career around delivering results to improve lives across the Great Lakes State. With so much on the line for communities across Michigan, he’s now taking the next step in his mission to give back to others by running for Congress in Michigan’s 11th District, and if elected, he’s determined to achieve tangible results on some of the toughest issues facing our children and families—including unchecked gun violence.
Senator Moss came of age as mass shootings became more prevalent in daily life, and he knows how gun violence impacts every American. He was in middle school when the Columbine shooting happened and in college when the Virginia Tech shooting took place, and as a member of the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities, the Tree of Life and Pulse nightclub shootings hit too close to home. As such, he’s prioritized gun violence prevention in office and worked tirelessly to save lives across his state. When he was first elected to the state legislature in 2016, he was a founding member of the Gun Violence Prevention Caucus, where he pushed against even cautious Democratic leaders to prioritize commonsense gun laws.
After years of advocacy and a number of tragic shootings close to home—like the Oxford High School shooting and a shooting at Moss’s alma mater Michigan State University—Senator Moss spearheaded the passage of Michigan’s first major gun safety legislation in decades, including passing universal background checks, requiring safe storage, and implementing red flag laws, all of which are saving lives.
While Senator Moss has helped bring about real change in Lansing, he knows that there is so much more to do in Washington DC to stop gun violence. In him, residents across Michigan’s 11th District will have a champion who will always put their interests first and fight against the gun lobby in a renewed gun safety House majority—from enacting important federal legislation to regulate weapons of war and dangerous ghost guns to adequately funding lifesaving community violence intervention programs.
