From a young age, Jocelyn Benson knew she wanted to fight for justice and make a difference, and her career has been defined by fearless public service and transformational leadership. In every role—from her time as civil rights advocate to her tenure making history as the youngest woman to ever lead an accredited law school, and of course now as Michigan’s secretary of state—she has always pushed to make lives better for others and never stopped working to give back to the communities that have shaped her.
While she’s taken on so many of the most pressing issues facing Michiganders in her current role, Secretary Benson has been particularly active around the need to keep our children and families safe from senseless shootings and to tackle the dangerous rise in political violence taking shape across our nation. In the face of persistent threats to herself and her family, which even saw armed protestors shown up on her front lawn, Secretary Benson fought to ensure Michiganders are safe and secure as they cast their ballots and worked with the state legislature to pass a law to ban guns at polling locations. As her state’s next governor, she’s determined to build on this progress by enacting additional commonsense gun reforms that will protect the next generation from harm. She’ll be a strong champion for keeping guns out of the hands of children and those experiencing mental health crises, regulating the proliferation of the kinds of untraceable ghost guns that are too frequently popping up at crime scenes, investing in lifesaving community violence intervention programs, and holding the corporate gun lobby accountable for its dangerous rhetoric and actions.
In recent years, leaders across Michigan have made important strides forward in the fight for safer communities—including passing a landmark universal background check requirement and an extreme risk law that is already proving effective. We can’t risk moving backwards in 2026, and now more than ever, we need to keep a gun safety champion in the governor’s office. Secretary Jocelyn Benson is exactly the right person for the job. She’s a proven fighter who won’t rest in the pursuit of a better tomorrow, and voters must mobilize like never before to elect her this November.
