For Congresswoman Judy Chu, the fight to end gun violence is deeply personal. In January 2023, a gunman opened fire at the Star Dance Ballroom in Monterey Park, California, in her district—killing 11 innocent people, injuring nine others, and forever changing a tight-knit community. In the years since, Congresswoman Chu has worked to heal her community with action and effectively utilized her position as chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus to lead national efforts to reduce violence and ensure that others don’t feel the devastation felt by her community.
In office, Representative Chu has built an impressive record of working with colleagues of all backgrounds to find solutions that will put an end to America’s epidemic of gun violence. She introduced the FLAG Act, which would provide $50 million in grants for state and local governments to distribute to community organizations that assist community members in navigating the complicated legal system when seeking to temporarily disarm someone showing signs of violence. Amid an ongoing spike in violence against Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, she also authored the Language Access to Gun Violence Prevention Strategies Act to ensure that federal resources on preventing gun violence are translated and accessible to non-English speaking communities across California. As a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Congresswoman Chu fought for the systemic solutions needed to stop shootings across the country, including voting to pass universal background checks, disarm domestic abusers, ban assault weapons, and research the root causes of gun violence—all of which culminated with her vote to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in 2022, which became the first major gun safety bill signed into law in nearly 30 years.
It’s clear that Congresswoman Judy Chu will always put the safety of her communities first, and in 2024, Californians must decisively reelect her so she can continue to push for measures to disarm hate and build a safer future for the next generation. We know that with her leading the charge on this issue, real progress is possible.
