A longtime advocate for gun safety, Attorney General Kathy Jennings works to protect Delaware communities from senseless gun violence every day. Before serving as attorney general, Attorney General Jennings worked at the Delaware Department of Justice where she prosecuted those responsible for gun violence and saw firsthand the devastating impact it can have on families and communities. Those experiences shaped her commitment to building a safer Delaware and fueled her determination to pursue solutions that save lives while strengthening public safety.
Throughout her time in office, Attorney General Jennings has established herself as one of the nation’s leading champions for commonsense gun safety laws. Following the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, Attorney General Jennings—then a state prosecutor—worked alongside the governor and attorney general to advocate for several new gun safety laws. Since taking office as attorney general, she has continued that work by helping pass historic legislation to crack down on ghost guns, ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, raise the minimum age for firearm possession, and hold irresponsible gun manufacturers and dealers accountable for reckless conduct. During her second term, after a five-year effort, Attorney General Jennings helped secure passage of Delaware’s landmark permit-to-purchase law, requiring training and a permit before purchasing a handgun—which is widely regarded as one of the most effective gun safety policies available to states. She also successfully defended Delaware’s assault weapons ban and high-capacity magazine restrictions all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
Attorney General Jennings’s leadership has helped deliver measurable results for Delaware families. During her tenure, violent crime has fallen to record lows, Wilmington homicides have dropped by more than 50% to a five-year low, and shootings in Dover have declined significantly. At the same time, Delaware has reduced incarceration and lowered recidivism rates, demonstrating that effective public safety strategies and smart criminal justice policies can work hand in hand. Attorney General Jennings understands that keeping communities safe requires both accountability and prevention, and she has never stopped fighting for policies that accomplish both.
At a time when the gun lobby and its allies continue to challenge lifesaving laws in courtrooms across the country, Delaware needs an attorney general who will continue defending the progress that has been made and fighting for safer communities.
