Like many people across the country, Representative Kelly Morrison believes that we need leaders in office who are focused on delivering results and putting the needs of their constituents above all else. That commitment guided her work in the Minnesota legislature, where she built a reputation for working across the aisle to tackle some of the state’s toughest challenges and successfully passed more than 90 bills in just six years—more than nearly any other legislator in Minnesota. Today, she has brought that same problem-solving approach to Congress, where she continues to champion commonsense solutions to some of our nation’s most pressing issues, including the epidemic of gun violence.

Prior to her career in public service, Representative Morrison worked as a physician and saw the devastation senseless shootings can render on everyday people. She’s also a mother who knows our children deserve better—which is why during her time in the state legislature, she helped pass legislation establishing universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders that have allowed law enforcement and family members to disarm those who pose a threat to themselves or others. She has seen the effectiveness of these measures in Minnesota and continues to advocate for similar lifesaving policies at the federal level. In Congress, she is a proud member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and a co-sponsor of the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, continuing her longstanding commitment to advancing policies that reduce gun violence and protect communities.

Representative Morrison has also demonstrated principled leadership in moments when our democracy has been tested. Following the assassination of her colleague and friend, Speaker Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark Hortman, she introduced a resolution condemning political violence and calling on leaders of all political persuasions to reject extremism and threats against public servants. The resolution passed unanimously, underscoring her belief that violence has no place in our politics or our communities.

Gun violence is a public health crisis that needs to be addressed as such—and there is no better leader equipped to do just that in Washington DC than a doctor like Representative Kelly Morrison. We know that she’ll always find the courage to act on this issue, stand up to the gun lobby, and work to build a safer tomorrow for the next generation.
