As a pediatrician, Congresswoman Kim Schrier knows that America’s gun violence epidemic is a public health crisis and that commonsense gun safety reforms play a crucial role in keeping our children and families safe. In this capacity, she also gained a thorough understanding of the important role that early intervention programs can play in breaking the cycles of violence that continue to plague our communities and land our children in the emergency room. Informed by her experiences in the medical field, Representative Schrier made the choice to take on an opponent with an A rating from the NRA in 2018—a race she handily won, giving Democrats control of the House of Representatives and paving the way for the passage of numerous gun safety bills over the last six years.
In office, Congresswoman Schrier has never shied away from the fight to end gun violence and has always put the health and well-being of her constituents first. She knows that consistently funding federal research into this issue is critical to understanding its causes and crafting effective solutions, and that lives depend on Congress taking action. In 2019, Representative Schrier played an active role in securing such funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health for the first time in more than two decades. As a congresswoman, she has also been a consistent supporter of legislation to expand background checks to all gun sales and to keep weapons out of the hands of individuals who have committed domestic abuse. In 2022, Congresswoman Schrier helped make history by helping pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years.
With so much on the line this fall, it’s more important than ever that Congress include leaders who have seen the devastating impacts of gun violence from all sides. Representative Schrier brings a unique set of eyes to this public health crisis, and it’s important that we continue to have medical professionals like her at the table to solve this problem once and for all. To do that, we’ll need to regain our gun safety majority in the House—and that starts with reelecting Congresswoman Kim Schrier this November.
