For former state senator Kirsten Engel, public service has always been about giving back to her community and fighting to improve the lives of her constituents, no matter their background. Now, Senator Engel is running for Congress to continue this important work from a new vantage point—and if elected, she’ll work tirelessly to tackle the many issues facing families across her district, including America’s epidemic of gun violence.
For Senator Engel, this fight is personal. Like so many in this movement, she believes it’s unconscionable that young people across Arizona are being subjected to the daily fear of senseless violence in their schools and on the streets of their communities. As a mom, she knows we need to come together to pass meaningful legislation to curb the number of shootings we’ve seen play out across the country—and in office, she’s done just that. In the state legislature, Senator Engel served as the point person on the Arizona House and Senate Judiciary committees fighting for the passage of critical gun violence prevention measures like extreme risk laws, a ban on bump stocks, and the closure of the gun show loophole, all while successfully defeating efforts to weaken gun-free school zones. In the wake of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, that claimed 17 innocent lives, Senator Engel also introduced legislation to require a waiting period between the time someone purchases a gun and when they take possession of their weapon to help cut down on impulsive firearm use and save lives lost to suicide.
It’s clear that Kirsten Engel is ready to make real change in Washington DC, and it’s imperative voters back her campaign this November. She’s proven that she has the legislative experience and passion needed to save lives from gun violence, while her opponent, Congressman Juan Ciscomani, does nothing more than bend to the whims of the gun lobby. We need her voice on Capitol Hill, because with her helping lead the charge for stronger gun laws, real progress is possible.
