As a former city council member, mayor, member of California’s General Assembly, and now as a congresswoman, Representative Laura Friedman has always put the people she serves first. Throughout her career, she’s worked to tackle the most important issues facing her constituents head on and deliver real results on some of the most pressing crises of the day—including America’s gun violence epidemic.
Representative Freidman’s leadership on gun safety stretches back all the way to her time on the Glendale City Council, where she cast the deciding vote to ban the carrying or displaying of guns on city property. This decision had very real impacts on her community, as it stopped the long-running Glendale Gun Show from being held at the Glendale Civic Center, which is across the street from a community college and down the block from an elementary school.
But Representative Friedman’s advocacy didn’t stop there—in Sacramento, she championed legislation to require handguns to be equipped with microstamping technology before they can be sold or transferred, to address the lack of safe firearm storage, and to establish a tax on licensed firearms dealers, firearms manufacturers, and ammunition vendors to fund programs that address the causes and harms of gun violence. And now in Washington DC, she’s continued to be a strong champion in the fight to save lives by working to expand background checks to all gun sales, supporting efforts to implement lifesaving red flag laws, and standing up for measures that will disarm domestic abusers and those who pose a threat to themselves or others. She knows that America’s gun violence crisis demands action, not just thoughts and prayers—and she’s also proudly cosponsored the Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act to ban bump stocks and devices that make semiautomatic weapons mimic fully automatic fire.
It’s clear that Representative Laura Friedman will always stand up for the most vulnerable among us and be among the strongest advocates for gun safety in Washington DC. Southern Californians must send her back to Capitol Hill this November to continue her impressive advocacy on this issue and finally help usher in a new era of public safety as part of a renewed gun safety House majority.
