As a former teacher, Lily Franklin knows what it feels like to go through active shooter drills, and she understands that we need to pass meaningful improvements to Virginia’s gun laws in order to truly keep our children safe. The issue of gun violence is particularly personal for her district as well, as it includes Virginia Tech’s campus, where a gunman claimed the lives of 32 students and staff members in 2007. In Richmond, Franklin will use the skills she first acquired as a former chief of staff in the House of Delegates to honor the lives lost in her community with action, by passing commonsense measures to expand background checks, keep firearms away from domestic abusers and people experiencing mental health crises, and encourage firearm owners to store their guns safely. This fall, we must flip the Virginia House of Delegates to give champions like Lily Franklin the ability to enact these lifesaving changes.
