For over three decades, Senator Louise Lucas has been a true champion in the fight to end gun violence and a consistent advocate for the many commonsense solutions needed to save lives across Virginia. As president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate, she has led her caucus in taking crucial action on gun safety in recent years, helping to pass lifesaving legislation like Virginia’s extreme risk law and a bill to expand background checks to all gun sales. 

For Senator Lucas, ending gun violence is personal. Having lost a nephew to senseless violence, she knows that families are never truly the same once they’ve been touched by this issue and that we owe our children a better, safer future. Her community has also experienced the horror of a mass shooting—as a gunman took the lives of six people and injured four others at a Chesapeake Walmart in Senator Lucas’s district in 2022. In the aftermath of this tragedy, she fought diligently to get guns out of the hands of those who would seek to do harm to themselves or others and to get weapons of war off Virginia’s streets. This fall, with our gun safety majority in the Virginia Senate on the line, it’s important that voters reelect proven champions like Senator Louise Lucas who will get legislation to regulate ghost guns, increase funding for community violence intervention programs, and disarm domestic abusers across the finish line. With her continuing to lead the way in the Senate, real progress on the issue of gun safety is possible.
