Throughout her career, Congresswoman Luz Rivas has made it a top priority to uplift and empower underrepresented communities—many of which are disproportionately impacted by America’s epidemic of gun violence. An engineer and educator by trade, she knows how to deal with complex problems and bring people together, and she’s committed to doing both to rally support for initiatives that will bolster public safety.
Prior to coming to Washington DC, Congresswoman Rivas was at the forefront of some of the most tangible action being taken on gun safety anywhere in the country as an active member of her state’s Gun Safety Working Group in the California Assembly in Sacramento. Throughout her tenure in state government, she supported several legislative measures to reduce gun violence, including including the Gun Violence Prevention and School Safety Act—an initiative that GIFFORDS helped build out and pass which will tax the gun industry to fund community violence programs, resources for gun violence survivors, and improve safety in schools. Congresswoman Rivas also supported legislation to regulate firearm possession for individuals under domestic violence protective orders and measures to strengthen and expand California’s background check system. Now she’s continuing to push for similar meaningful reforms at the federal level on Capitol Hill as a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, having already supported legislation to ban assault weapons, expand background checks to all firearm and ammunition purchases, and block abusive dating partners from obtaining weapons.
With so much on the line in 2026, it’s imperative that voters across California send their best gun safety champions back to Capitol Hill to get the job done on this issue and protect their communities from harm—starting with Congresswoman Luz Rivas. We know she has what it takes to build coalitions to get things done and that she’ll always stand up to the gun lobby and their corrupt interests. With her leading the way, a safer world is within reach.
