As a respected leader in both public service and the private sector, Senator Maria Cantwell knows that hard work brings results. Throughout her four terms in the Senate, Senator Cantwell has worked tirelessly to advance the interests of everyday Washingtonians and improve the quality of life of each of her constituents by addressing some of the most intractable issues of the day—including America’s epidemic of gun violence.
In Washington DC, Senator Cantwell has been a strong leader in the fight to save lives from senseless violence and address the glaring loopholes in our nation’s lax gun laws that have put too many at risk. She knows that the daily community violence impacting cities across the country and the string of mass shootings that have made headline news time and time again are unacceptable—and she’s fought to ban the sale of assault weapons, to expand background checks to all gun sales, and to make sure that domestic abusers cannot get their hands on a firearm. Senator Cantwell knows that we need to treat gun violence like the public health crisis it is, and she proudly cosponsored legislation to allocate $250 million in federal funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to research the root causes of gun violence and develop necessary solutions to improve public safety. In 2022, she also joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle in putting our children first in the wake of the deadly mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and helped pass the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first major gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years. This lifesaving bill made historic investments in community violence intervention programs, made gun trafficking a federal crime, and allocated desperately needed funding to assist states in implementing red flag laws, which are designed to remove guns from the hands of those seeking to harm themselves or others.
This fall, Washingtonians must send Maria Cantwell back to the United States Senate—we know that if elected to another term, she’ll continue to be the leader the next generation needs in Washington and never stop fighting to build a future free from gun violence. Now more than ever, we must protect our gun safety majority in the US Senate and continue to build on the progress made in recent years—because lives depend on it.
