As a proud father, former diplomat and public school teacher, small business owner, and the leader of Delaware’s largest local government, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer has always put service to others first. In every role, he’s fought to deliver real results for real people and make needed progress for Delaware’s working families. Now, County Executive Meyer is running for governor to bring that same result-driven leadership across the state by creating an effective government that can deliver on some of the toughest issues facing Delawareans—including tackling our epidemic of gun violence.
In his current role, County Executive Meyer has made ending senseless violence and bolstering public safety a top priority. He helped fund the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence and fought to pass the most comprehensive set of gun safety ordinances in New Castle County history, which restricted guns and ammunition in all county facilities and required gun stores to install video surveillance, alarms, and other security measures to protect against theft. Under his leadership, violent and non-violent crime rates in areas policed by the county police he helped oversee dropped to historic lows, including a 44% decrease in shootings. In Dover, County Executive Meyer will continue this important, lifesaving work by signing measures into law that build on his state’s already strong gun laws and reduce crime—including outlawing concealed carry in bars, enacting a state waiting period for gun purchase, requiring that all guns sold in our state have childproofing features, and holding gun traffickers strictly liable under state law.
Now more than ever, governors are at the front lines of the fight for safer communities and it’s imperative that we have gun safety champions leading the way in states across the country. This fall, voters must mobilize like never before to send County Executive Matt Meyer to office—we know that with him pushing for progress on gun safety from the governor’s mansion, a safer future for the next generation is within reach.
