Born and raised in New Mexico, Representative Melanie Stansbury has always led with the values she learned growing up in a working class family in the North Valley and West Side of Albuquerque: grit, resilience, determination, and heart. She brought each of these characteristics to her early career as an aide in the US Senate and the Executive Office of the President, and later to her first campaign for public office. In 2018, she was elected to be the first woman ever to serve as a state representative for New Mexico’s 28th House District—a role she held until she ran for Congress and won a seat in the US House in a 2021 special election.
 
Representative Stansbury understands many of the struggles New Mexican families go through daily, including coping with the deadly epidemic of gun violence. Instead of standing by and letting these issues set her community back, Representative Stansbury has dedicated her career to helping build a brighter future for her constituents. In office, she has supported numerous pieces of lifesaving legislation like the Protecting our Kids Act, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, and the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act. She knows that banning large-capacity magazines, bump stocks, and ghost guns; addressing gun trafficking; incentivizing the safe storage of firearms; and putting extreme risk protection measures into place will help save lives across New Mexico.
 
Now more than ever, we need representatives in Congress who will never stop fighting to pass stronger gun safety measures. Representative Melanie Stansbury is a true champion in this movement, and New Mexicans must send her back to Washington DC this fall.
