Senator Mike McGuire is a leader for the people of Northern California. From his youth on his family’s ranch to his time serving as the majority leader and president pro tempore of the California State Senate, he has never forgotten his roots. As senate leader, McGuire helped pass the largest affordability package in decades, which expanded housing access and job opportunities for working families, creating a pathway to the middle class. Now, he is running for Congress to make similarly impactful changes for Californians at the national level—this time by taking on the gun lobby and passing lifesaving gun safety legislation. 

In the California Senate, Senator McGuire supported crucial legislation to keep children and families safe. His leadership led to the passage of laws strengthening California’s assault weapons ban and concealed carry requirements, and creating dedicated funding for school safety and community violence intervention programs. He has also supported measures to crack down on ghost guns and illegal firearms to help keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals and make our communities safer. In Congress, he will work to bring California’s successful approach nationwide by supporting universal background checks, stronger protections against ghost guns and illegal trafficking, safe storage requirements, and sustained federal investment in community violence intervention programs. He will also fight to restore a federal assault weapons ban and restrictions on large-capacity magazines. These evidence-backed policy solutions have been key to California’s relatively low rate of gun violence, and Senator McGuire is eager to get to DC and champion these policies in Congress. 

Inspired by his grandmother’s work ethic and determination, Senator McGuire has been a champion for his constituents in the state legislature. He knows how to get things done and has the proven ability to lead in challenging times. This fall, the people of California’s First District have the opportunity to elect a leader who will stand strong and fight for the everyday people he represents.
