Senator Monty Mason knows that lawmakers have a duty to protect their communities and our children from the dangers associated with senseless gun violence. Throughout his career, he’s championed numerous commonsense measures to keep his constituents safe while still respecting the rights of responsible gun owners, like universal background checks and Virginia’s extreme risk law. In Richmond, he helped to pass an assault weapons ban through the senate during the 2023 term and served as the chief co-patron of legislation to require any person who possesses a firearm in a residence where minors are present to securely store their weapon. This issue took on particular importance for Senator Mason in 2023, when a six-year-old student at Richneck Elementary School in his district got their hands on a gun and shot their teacher. In response, Senator Mason took swift action to introduce a $1.5 million budget amendment to help secure several open classrooms at Richneck and ensure that similar tragedies could never happen again. Now, Senator Monty Mason is running for reelection in the toughest seat on the map this cycle, and our gun safety majority in the Virginia Senate will hinge on the results.
