As Louisville’s voice in Congress and as the former minority leader of the Kentucky State Senate, Congressman Morgan McGarvey has been on the front lines of the fight to end gun violence for years. In both Washington DC and Frankfort, he’s been a leading advocate for commonsense gun safety legislation and has worked tirelessly to combat America’s epidemic of gun violence.
For Congressman McGarvey, the effort to curb gun violence is deeply personal. In 2018, one of his constituents, Whitney Austin, survived a mass shooting after being shot 12 times while going to work. On the day she was discharged from the hospital, Congressman McGarvey went to sit in her living room and discuss all of the gun violence prevention policies they could work on together in the Kentucky General Assembly. In the wake of that shooting, he worked across the aisle with members of the state’s Republican supermajority to champion crisis aversion and rights retention bills that would allow law enforcement to temporarily remove firearms from persons who are deemed to be a danger to themselves or others.
Sadly, not even four months into his time on Capitol Hill, Congressman McGarvey again had to deal with the impacts of gun violence wreaking havoc on his community when a mass shooting claimed the lives of five people and injured eight others at a bank in Louisville. In office and as a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, he’s worked to honor the lives of those lost by continuing to champion needed reforms designed to strengthen our background check system and ban assault weapons.
We must elect lawmakers who understand the need to strengthen our gun laws and keep our kids safe. Congressman Morgan McGarvey will be that champion—and we know he’ll always find the courage to act to keep communities across his district safe from senseless violence.
