After one of the worst tragedies in state history—the devastating shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School—legislators across Connecticut acted swiftly to enact laws that would prevent future tragedies and save innocent lives. For eight years, Governor Ned Lamont has continued this work and fought tirelessly to honor the legacies of those lost to gun violence in Newtown and across his state by signing additional gun safety bills in office that are designed to keep children, families, and communities safe.
In 2021, Governor Lamont passed critical legislation to strengthen Connecticut’s landmark extreme risk law, which when passed in 1999 was the first of its kind in the nation and gave law enforcement the authority to temporarily remove firearms from someone when they are a significant risk of harm to themselves or others. The new provisions signed by Governor Lamont that year allowed family members and clinicians to request court intervention when a person poses an imminent risk of injury to themselves or others.
Throughout his tenure, Governor Lamont has also taken action to promote responsible gun ownership, including signing Ethan’s Law—a landmark piece of legislation that mandates the safe storage of unattended firearms in homes where children are present. He has worked across state lines to help institute an agreement with the governors of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania to share gun data between the states in an effort to reduce crime across the region. Governor Lamont has also partnered with national organizations and advocates, including GIFFORDS PAC, to further strengthen Connecticut’s already strong gun safety laws by expanding background checks, closing dangerous loopholes, banning ghost guns, and investing in community-based violence intervention strategies.
The dysfunction and chaos we’re seeing coming out of Washington DC these days has made it clear that having governors in office who will work to protect their constituents from harm is more important than ever. Governor Ned Lamont is committed to upholding Connecticut’s existing gun safety laws, and we know he will always find the courage to act on this issue—paving the way towards a safer, brighter future for Connecticut’s children and families.
