Before being elected to Congress, Representative Norma Torres worked for over 17 years as a 911 dispatcher for the Los Angeles Police Department. Motivated by a desire to make a difference in the lives of people like those who called her in their moments of need, Representative Torres decided to run for a seat on the city council seat in Pomona, California, which she won. A few years later, she went on to be elected mayor and then continued to represent the Inland Empire in the State Assembly and State Senate.
 
In Washington DC, Representative Torres has been a leading supporter and cosponsor of legislation like the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, the Ghost Guns are Guns Act, and the Multiple Firearm Sales Reporting Modernization Act. She recognizes that our country owes it to gun violence victims and their loved ones to pass the commonsense laws that could prevent the same tragedies from repeating. Representative Torres also understands that America’s lax gun laws undermine national security and public safety around the world. In office, she’s fought to tighten regulations on gun exports to keep lethal weapons out of the hands of America’s enemies abroad.
