Candidate
Nydia Velázquez
US House
New York
— 7th District Democrat
Incumbent2024
Throughout her more than three decades in Washington DC, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez has consistently worked to prevent gun violence in all forms and get dangerous weapons off of New York’s streets. As the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the US House of Representatives, she understands that Latino and Hispanic communities are disproportionately hurt by gun violence in the United States and that gun deaths among Hispanic communities have increased at nearly twice the rate of gun deaths nationally—and she’s committed to tackling this problem head on so that every child can live a safer life free from the threat of violence.
In office, Representative Velázquez has authored numerous pieces of transformative legislation to curb America’s epidemic of gun violence with urgency. She introduced the Protecting Americans from Gun Violence Act, which establishes a new fee on gun sales and requires that a $1 fee be collected following every registered background check. In turn, revenue from this tax would help fund research to prevent gun violence and to preserve the operation of background checks. Representative Velázquez also introduced theStopping the Iron Pipeline Act, which would establish a national standard for weapon identification technology installed within firearms and enable law enforcement to trace the origins of guns connected to criminal activity. In the wake of the deadly shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, she joined her colleagues for a sit-in on the House floor demanding action on gun violence. She has been a champion for commonsense measures like universal background checks, safe storage requirements, and red flag laws throughout her tenure in the House.
With so much on the line this fall, we must reelect leaders who will help lead the fight to ban assault weapons and repeal gun industry immunity laws—leaders like Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. In a new gun safety majority, she’ll always find the courage to act on gun violence prevention and never tire from putting the safety of her constituents first.
