Commissioner Oliver Gilbert was raised in Miami Gardens by two parents who didn’t always see the world the same way, and from then he learned that people don’t always have to agree on everything to respect each other and build something successful. Throughout his career—from his work as an attorney, to serving as mayor of the city of Miami Gardens, to his time working county wide as a commissioner—he’s used this same approach to give back to the community that has given him so much and tackle some of the most pressing issues facing his neighbors, including the scourge of gun violence.
Like so many people in this movement, Commissioner Gilbert knows that, while hard, we can get real results in the fight to save lives from gun violence if we find the courage to act. During his time as mayor of Miami Gardens, Commissioner Gilbert invested in community policing and innovative measures to reduce gun violence that resulted in a 50% drop in homicides by his final year in office. In 2022, he built on that work at the county level and co-sponsored the Peace and Prosperity Plan for Miami-Dade County and sponsored an $8.8 million community violence intervention initiative in an attempt to interrupt local cycles of violence. For Commissioner Gilbert, this work isn’t just about facts and figures, it’s about the real people who are impacted—and in Congress, he’s determined to be a fearless gun safety champion committed to expanding background checks, strengthening safe storage laws, and fighting to secure additional funding for gun violence research.
For too long, Floridians have borne the brunt of America’s gun violence epidemic. Now more than ever, we need a new generation of leaders in Washington working to pass real solutions to save lives—starting with Commissioner Oliver Gilbert. He has the experience and passion to make a real difference for families in the Sunshine State and across the country, and with him leading the way in the US House, a safer future for our children will be within reach.
