Senator Patty Murray started her career as “just a mom in tennis shoes” who never saw herself running for public office. However, she knew that there simply wasn’t time to wait for someone else to fix the problems impacting Washington’s children and families. In 1992, Senator Murray found the courage to act on the issues that mattered most to her community by running and winning election to the United States Senate. In the nearly three decades since, she has worked diligently to keep American communities safe from the scourge of gun violence and blazed a new trail for women in leadership.
As assistant Democratic leader, Senator Murray has consistently helped lead her caucus in advocating for common sense gun safety measures like passing universal background checks and protecting women from domestic violence by limiting the ability of abusers to access firearms. In her capacity as the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, Murray secured the first dedicated funding to research the causes and impacts of gun violence in over 20 years. This historic allocation conveyed to public health institutions that not only was research into gun violence allowed—it was necessary. But this is just a start. We must continue and increase this funding in order to make up for lost time so that we can learn how best to protect American families and communities from the devastation of gun violence—and doing so starts with protecting our gun safety Senate majority by reelecting Senator Patty Murray to another term.
