Phil Hernandez knows that when individuals and families thrive, communities thrive. A core part of that work includes keeping families across Norfolk safe from senseless gun violence. For too long, Virginia’s high rates of gun violence have claimed too many lives, and it’s well past time for the region’s leaders to take needed action to save lives. Hernandez is exactly the kind of champion we need in this fight—someone with a proven track record of compassion and policy expertise. Hernandez previously served as a senior policy analyst on President Obama’s White House Domestic Policy Council and worked as a civil rights attorney—a role that allowed him to bring together people from all walks of life in the name of creating real change.

In Richmond, Hernandez will support policies that take weapons of war off our streets, strengthen safe storage laws, invest in gun violence prevention programs, and address the growing risks posed by ghost guns. He’ll also work to protect recent legislation that is critical to reducing gun violence in our communities, including Virginia’s extreme risk law.
