He brings deep experience in public service—from serving as an assistant attorney general, an assistant United States attorney, and a senior advisor at the US Department of Justice to his tenure as Bernalillo County district attorney and now as New Mexico’s attorney general. Throughout every stage of his career, he has been a steadfast advocate for reducing gun violence and strengthening public safety, earning a reputation as one of the state’s leading champions for safer communities.
As Bernalillo County district attorney, Attorney General Torrez consistently advocated for commonsense gun safety solutions, repeatedly urging the New Mexico legislature to enact lifesaving policies such as universal background checks and extreme risk protection orders. While respecting the Second Amendment and the rights of responsible gun owners, he also championed safe storage measures to help prevent firearms from falling into dangerous hands. He was the first prosecutor in the nation to bring legal action against a heavily armed extremist militia that sought to use firearms to intimidate and silence members of the public exercising their constitutional rights. Throughout his career, Attorney General Torrez has also worked closely with organizations including New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, Prosecutors Against Gun Violence, and the New Mexico Coalition for Common Sense to advance practical, evidence-based approaches to reducing gun violence.
As New Mexico’s chief law enforcement officer, Attorney General Torrez continues to prioritize public safety by enforcing the state’s gun laws, partnering with law enforcement agencies, and defending policies that help keep firearms out of dangerous hands.
