Dr. Richard Pan is a public health leader who has dedicated his career to building safe and healthy communities. Before he was elected to the California legislature, Dr. Pan founded numerous community health programs to make healthcare more accessible to 65,000 children in the Sacramento area—and as an elected official, he expanded on that work by authoring critical pieces of legislation that improved the health and well-being for children across the entire state of California. Now, he is running for Congress to bring his public health leadership to Washington DC as we take back the House and enact lifesaving legislation to prevent the leading cause of death of children across America: gun violence.
As a pediatrician, Dr. Pan knows the value of researching the great public health challenges of our time. While serving as a state legislator, Dr. Pan fought for state-funded research on the causes of gun violence, which included establishing the Firearm Violence Research Center at UC Davis. In Congress, he will push to protect federal public health agencies like the CDC and NIH, and advocate for these agencies to conduct lifesaving research on gun violence and policy solutions to address this crisis. Dr. Pan’s experience treating victims of gun violence also motivated his support for strong gun safety laws in California. He has a proven track record of working across the aisle to pass legislation, including authoring a bill to keep guns out of the hands of prohibited persons. Dr. Pan has been a leader at the forefront of public health in California and is eager to bring his experience to DC.
Dr. Pan is no stranger to tough elections. In 2010, he successfully flipped his state assembly seat from red to blue in the face of tough national results for Democrats. This year, he has the chance to repeat such a feat and in him, the people of California’s Sixth Congressional District have the opportunity to gain a fighter and public health champion.
