Mayor Robert Garcia believes that America’s gun violence epidemic requires the same focus and commitment from the federal government as our country’s health and economic recovery. First elected by the people of Long Beach in 2014, Mayor Garcia has spent the past eight years publicly supporting commonsense gun regulation at the state and local level, and he is eager to continue addressing this life-or-death issue as part of a new generation of federal leaders if elected to Congress this fall.
As an openly gay Latino man, Mayor Garcia acutely understands the disproportionate effect that gun violence and hate crimes have on communities of color—and as a former educator, he is appalled by our government’s inability to keep children safe in our schools. Mayor Garcia believes we need swift and sweeping changes to our gun laws, and if elected to Congress, he will be a fierce advocate for passing universal background checks, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, and implementing national extreme risk laws. Throughout his tenure, Mayor Garcia has never let up on efforts to end gun violence in his city, and he has frequently joined forces with local law enforcement and community groups to improve public safety. Together, they developed and implemented numerous violence prevention programs, like the Neighborhood Walks program, which encourages officers to walk in Long Beach neighborhoods, interact with residents and businesses, and restore police-community trust.
With so much on the line this November, it’s important that we protect our majority in the House by electing gun safety champions from coast to coast—champions like Mayor Robert Garcia. We know he has the courage to act to end gun violence, and the people of Southern California deserve a legislator who will always put their well-being first.
