Throughout nearly four decades in the public eye, former governor Roy Cooper has always made it his mission to give back to others. In all of his roles—as a Sunday School teacher and tutor, a lawyer representing everyday people and small businesses, the dad to three daughters, and a member state legislature—he has consistently put the needs of North Carolina families first. That same dedication to his constituents has never wavered, even as he took his service statewide: first as the Tar Heel State’s top law enforcement official during his four terms as attorney general, and most recently over the course of his eight years as governor.
In every role, Governor Cooper has proven himself to be an unmatched gun safety champion. As a gun owner himself, he knows that we can and must respect the Second Amendment rights of anyone who chooses to responsibly own firearms—and that we can also work to pass real reforms needed to safeguard our communities from harm. It’s why as governor, he established North Carolina’s Office of Violence Prevention, created the NC Safe Initiative to incentivize secure storage practices, and signed an executive directive to strengthen his state’s background check system. In the face of strong partisan opposition, he served as a national example of the need to not let politics get in the way of public safety when he chose to veto dangerous attempts by Republicans to repeal pistol permit systems that were vitally important to ensuring that weapons don’t fall into the wrong hands.
If elected to the Senate, Governor Cooper will continue to push for meaningful solutions to curb America’s gun violence epidemic because he knows we owe it to our children to address this public health crisis head on. In Washington DC, Governor Cooper will work to disarm domestic abusers, stop the proliferation of untraceable ghost guns, ban assault weapons, make sure critical law enforcement agencies like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives have the full funding needed to investigate crime and reduce senseless violence, and close dangerous loopholes in our national laws that put too many innocent people at risk.
