Rozia Henson has always made it his mission to ensure that underrepresented, marginalized voices are heard and that they feel supported by their local leaders and community. Now, he hopes to do so as a member of the House of Delegates, where he’ll continue to prioritize the issues that matter most to the people he hopes to serve, like curbing Virginia’s epidemic of gun violence.
Henson first came to this issue during his time working for Senator Henry Marsh, where he got to hear firsthand about the tragic case of Brendon Mackey, a seven-year-old that was killed by a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire. Collaborating closely with Senator Marsh, Henson devoted countless hours to developing and championing a law that would elevate the act of celebratory gunfire resulting in injury to a felony offense. Through persistent efforts, and collaboration with legislators from both sides of the aisle, he successfully saw the enactment of Brendon’s Law in 2014. If elected in his own right, Henson will build on this progress by continuing to fight for meaningful gun safety laws, including a ban on ghost guns and the alarming practice of 3D printing firearms, making investments in violence intervention programs, and encating measures to disqualify people who have been convicted of committing a violent offense against an intimate partner from accessing firearms. With control of the House of Delegates on the line this fall, it’s time for voters to step up and elect more gun safety champions to office—starting with Rozia Henson.
