Sara Gideon’s spirit of service runs deep, starting with her time as Vice Chair of her local town council in Freeport. First elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 2012, Sara has been sent back to office four times by Mainers and chosen by her colleagues to lead as Speaker. Sara’s leadership has been marked by continued efforts to reach across the aisle to improve the lives of those she represents—an approach she will carry with her to the US Senate. 

As Speaker, Sara fought to pass commonsense gun safety measures. Tired of inaction from federal Republican leadership in Washington, Sara supported bills in the Maine House to implement extreme risk protection orders and prohibit firearm accessories that make weapons deadlier. Additionally, Sara is a strong advocate for background checks on all firearm purchases and transfers. Sara Gideon has always stood up for Maine and will continue to do so by supporting lifesaving gun violence prevention legislation in the US Senate.
