Congresswoman Sarah McBride has been advocating for her community for decades at the state and national level. Before she was elected to public office in 2020, she worked for former Delaware Governor Jack Markell and the late Attorney General Beau Biden, served in the Obama-Biden administration, and became a nationally recognized voice on so many critically important issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community as the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign—issues like our country’s epidemic of gun violence.
Like so many in this movement, Congresswoman McBride knows that few issues are more urgent than gun safety. During her time as a state legislator in Dover, she proudly took on the gun lobby as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and fought to pass the Delaware Lethal Firearms Safety Act of 2022—the most comprehensive gun safety package in state history, which banned assault weapons in Delaware and removed the blanket liability shield for gun dealers and manufacturers. In that role, Congresswoman McBride also supported legislation to ban devices that converted handguns into dangerous fully automatic weapons and championed the Delaware Large-Capacity Magazines Prohibition Act, which banned large-capacity magazines in the state. Now as a member of Congress, Congresswoman McBride has been a tireless advocate for taking so many of these lifesaving reforms nationwide—from strengthening background checks, to banning assault weapons, to instituting safeguards to keep guns out of the hands of those who pose threats to themselves or others. On Capitol Hill, she’s also pushed to strengthen safe storage requirements to ensure children can’t access deadly weapons, more adequately fund lifesaving community violence intervention programs, and disarm domestic abusers.
This fall, voters across Delaware have the chance to make history once again by reelecting Congresswoman Sarah McBride to another term—where she’s already inspired so many Americans as the first openly transgender member ever elected to the US House.
