Sarah Trone Garriott has spent her life answering a call to serve—as a minister, a mom, a nonprofit leader, and a state legislator. From her early days as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer supporting survivors of domestic violence to her work as a hospital chaplain and ordained Lutheran pastor, Sarah has stood alongside families in their most difficult moments. After moving to Iowa, she expanded that work as a nonprofit leader addressing food insecurity and building bridges across communities of faith. Frustrated by leaders who weren’t listening, she stepped up to run for office and flipped a Republican held seat in the Iowa State Senate. Since then, she has built a reputation as a pragmatic, effective leader who can win tough races and deliver for working families across the state.

Sarah understands that public safety means protecting families and communities from preventable harm, including gun violence. As a volunteer with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, she has been part of a nationwide movement advocating for commonsense solutions to save lives. She believes we can respect the traditions of responsible gun ownership in Iowa while also taking meaningful steps to keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals. In office, Sarah will support measures like strengthening background checks, promoting safe storage, and investing in mental health resources—because no parent, pastor, or community leader should have to comfort someone facing the devastation of gun violence.
