Since then, he has remained focused on another critical fight: ending the epidemic of gun violence. Whether standing up to the gun lobby, advancing commonsense gun safety reforms, or working to keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands, Representative Casten has consistently put the safety of Illinois families first.
Throughout his tenure, Representative Casten has been a vocal champion for critical gun safety reforms and has built a strong record of advancing meaningful policies to prevent senseless tragedies. While Illinois has some of the strongest gun laws in the country, weak laws in neighboring states continue to fuel illegal gun trafficking into communities across the state. To help combat this deadly trend, Representative Casten introduced the Gun Trafficker Detection Act, which would require gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms within 48 hours, strengthening law enforcement’s ability to identify and disrupt illegal gun trafficking networks. He has also introduced the Preventing Illegal Weapons Trafficking Act to crack down on dangerous gun modification devices and the Juvenile Firearms Safety Act to hold adults accountable when they enable young people to gain access to firearms. In Congress, Representative Casten has continued fighting to strengthen background checks, ban assault weapons, and end illegal gun trafficking. He also joined colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major federal gun safety legislation enacted in nearly three decades.
