In 2018, Representative Sharice Davids defeated an NRA-backed incumbent to become one of the first Native American women ever elected to Congress. Since then, she has been a fervent supporter of commonsense gun safety measures in Washington DC and has always prioritized the communities and families of Kansas.
Representative Davids learned the tenets of responsible gun ownership at a young age as the daughter of a single mother who served in the Army for more than 20 years. As a gun owner herself, she is a strong believer in the Second Amendment, but like so many Kansans, she knows the importance of storing weapons safely and treating firearms with proper care. Like many in the movement to end gun violence, Congresswoman Davids knows that this issue is a public health crisis and that we need commonsense solutions.
For Representative Davids, this issue is personal. When her own community was touched by gun violence at a local high school, she met with students, administrators, and first responders to chart a path forward that combined healing with action. In Congress, she has always found the courage to act and has frequently cosponsored legislation to end America’s epidemic of gun violence, including the Bipartisan Background Checks Act. Congresswoman Davids also supports numerous pieces of legislation that would end dangerous cycles of violence by allocating funding for community violence intervention programs, address the rise in violence motivated by hate, and incentivize states to pass legislation that would give law enforcement and family members the ability to petition a judge to remove firearms from individuals exhibiting signs of wanting to harm themselves of others. In 2022, she was also proud to support the first major gun safety legislation signed into law in nearly 30 years: the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
Representative Davids is fighting for a better and safer future for all Kansans. Over the past six years, she has proven that she not only understands gun safety issues, but that she will never give up in the fight to protect the communities she represents from gun violence. With gun safety opponents eager to roll back progress, it is incumbent on all of us to regain our House majority this fall by sending champions like Congresswoman Sharice Davids back to Congress in 2025.
