Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has spent his career working to make life better for every Rhode Island family. As a US attorney and Rhode Island’s attorney general, he took steps to reduce crime and hold bad actors accountable. As a US senator on Capitol Hill, he’s been focused on strengthening America’s lax gun laws as a member of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee.

Like so many in this movement, Senator Whitehouse knows that the scope of America’s gun violence epidemic is unacceptable and that we must do more to keep our communities safe. In the Senate, he’s been a strong supporter of lifesaving, commonsense measures like implementing universal background checks, strengthening safe storage requirements, regulating the sale of untraceable ghost guns, and banning the assault weapons and large-capacity magazines that have caused so much carnage in mass shootings across the country. Time and again, he’s also joined his colleagues to push for the passage of legislation to close the Charleston loophole, which would give law enforcement more time to complete background checks and keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those who should not have access. In 2022, Senator Whitehouse successfully worked with colleagues across the aisle to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act—the first major federal gun safety legislation to be signed into law in nearly 30 years.

With the gun safety majority in the Senate on the line this fall, it’s imperative that voters send committed gun safety champions like Senator Whitehouse back to Washington DC to fight on their behalf. In him, Rhode Islanders will always have a senator who will put public safety above partisan politics and never tire from pushing to bring real change to fruition.
