As an educator and parent, Delegate Shelly Simonds believes that we need to do all we can to prevent gun violence in our schools and communities. Like so many in this movement, she knows that we have more guns than people in the United States today and that children should not pay the price for the loopholes in our gun laws that put so many at risk. In office, she’s determined to bring members from both sides of the aisle together to pass legislation designed to keep firearms out of our school buildings. This year, she even created a four-point plan to tackle the rise in school-based violence focused on improving safe storage laws so that people are required to store firearms safely in the home away from children, increasing criminal and civil liability for people who allow kids access to firearms, driving more frequent communication from schools about the rules around firearms and safe storage information for families, and securing funding for more school staff to support student mental health and safety. Delegate Shelly Simonds is running in one of the toughest districts in the Commonwealth this fall, and voters must do everything in their power to see to it that she returns to Richmond in 2024 to finish what she’s started. By reelecting her, we can make real progress on school safety and create a safer tomorrow for thousands of Virginia’s students.
