For Shomari Figures, Alabama is home. It’s where he was raised in his grandfather’s church and where he was educated from kindergarten to law school. Inspired by his parents who devoted their careers to public service and helping Alabamians, Figures has dedicated his life’s work to advocating for his community at every level of government—because he knows that Alabama deserves better than to have the fourth-highest rate of gun violence in the country.
Throughout his career, Figures has held many titles. He was a law clerk on the federal court, President Obama’s domestic director of presidential personnel, a White House liaison at the Department of Justice, a counsel in the US Senate, and deputy chief of staff and counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland. But none of these roles is more important to Figures than being a father to three children. He knows that we owe their generation the chance to live free from gun violence—and if elected to Congress, he’ll continue the important work he’s done in so many capacities to reduce gun violence by expanding background checks to all gun sales, banning bump stocks and assault weapons, implementing red flag laws that are designed to disarm those who pose threats to themselves or others, and adequately funding lifesaving community violence intervention programs.
For the first time in decades, voters in Alabama’s newly redrawn Second District have the chance to send a gun safety champion like Figures to Congress to advocate on their behalf, but it will take voters from Mobile to Montgomery mobilizing like never before to get the job done. It’s imperative that we flip the House in 2024, reclaim a gun safety majority in the chamber, and get back to passing the desperately needed policies that the American people demand—and with Shomari Figures leading the way, we know that real progress will be within reach come 2025.
