Governor Steve Sisolak is a coalition builder and problem solver who always puts the needs of his constituents first. His career has been grounded in service from the start, and his commitments to increasing public safety and ensuring that every Nevadan has the opportunity to succeed have been evident in every role he’s taken on—from the Nevada Board of Regents, to the Clark County Commission, and now as governor.
For Governor Sisolak and members of his community, the fight to end gun violence is personal. On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire at the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas, killing 60 people and injuring hundreds more. At the time of the attack, Governor Sisolak was serving as chair of the Clark County Commission, and he saw the devastation of this horrific incident firsthand. From that day forward, he pledged to do more to protect the children and families of his community from senseless violence. In office, Governor Sisolak has delivered on this promise by signing numerous commonsense gun safety reforms into law. Under his leadership, Nevada passed legislation to ban bump stocks, implement background checks on all gun sales, and close the gun show loophole once and for all. He has also taken steps to crack down on the proliferation of ghost guns in an attempt to protect Nevadans from the dangers of deadly, untraceable firearms.
Governors across the country are making real progress in the fight to end gun violence, and we must make sure that leaders like Steve Sisolak are reelected this fall. Elections in Nevada are always close, and in 2020, President Biden won the state by just two and a half points. The gun lobby is eager to roll back the hardfought progress our movement has made in Nevada, and we know it’ll pour everything it has into flipping this state—and we cannot let them win. In Governor Steve Sisolak, we have a battleborn champion who won’t quit until every child can grow up in a world free from senseless violence. With him leading the charge, we know a safer future is possible.
