For Congressman Steven Horsford, the issue of gun violence is personal. When he was just 19, Representative Horsford lost his father in a tragic shooting. Like many survivors, he turned his pain into action and dedicated his life to advocating for his community in Las Vegas—first in the Nevada Senate, and now in Congress.
In 2018, Representative Horsford was part of a freshman class that handed Democrats a gun safety majority in the House and a mandate to advance legislation designed to keep American communities safe for the first time in years. Since then, whether in the majority or the minority, he has partnered with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to fight to make progress on gun safety. In 2022, he helped pull off what many thought to be impossible when he was integral in pushing the landmark Bipartisan Safer Communities Act across the finish line, which became the first major gun safety legislation passed in nearly 30 years.
As the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus from 2023 to 2025, Representative Horsford also made great strides in uplifting the issue of community violence intervention. Specifically, he has repeatedly introduced the Break the Cycle of Violence Act, which would allocate $6.5 billion for effective community-based violence intervention programs and create a new Office of Community Violence Intervention and a National Community Violence Response Center within the Department of Health and Human Services.
It’s imperative that we keep leaders in Washington who can speak to the lived experiences of survivors of gun violence. In 2026, Nevadans fighting for a safer world must show up in full force to reelect Representative Steven Horsford to Congress—with him fighting to save lives in Congress, progress is possible.
