Representative Mike Thompson has always put service to his country first, and he continues that mission today as a champion for gun safety legislation in Congress. Prior to his election to the House, Representative Thompson served his country in the Army, leading a platoon with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and receiving a Purple Heart for wounds he sustained in Vietnam. He later gained crucial policy experience in the California State Senate and continues to serve as one of the nation’s foremost legislators to this day.
In Congress, Representative Thompson has served as chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force since its inception in 2012. He also serves as the lead author of HR 8—the Bipartisan Background Checks Act—which is the most meaningful gun violence prevention legislation to pass the House in over 25 years. This lifesaving legislation would expand background checks to all gun sales and transfers and ensure that individuals who commit domestic abuse and crimes are unable to get their hands on firearms.
Throughout his tenure, Representative Thompson has also worked closely with the Biden administration to crack down on the proliferation of ghost guns and to increase funding for important community violence intervention programs. His leadership is responsible for so many of the strides made in the fight to end America’s epidemic of gun violence in recent years, and as a lifelong hunter and responsible gun owner who supports the right of law-abiding citizens to possess and own guns, Representative Thompson has helped drive home the point that that passing gun safety laws and protecting the constitutional rights of Americans can go hand in hand.
The fight to end gun violence as we know it simply wouldn’t be possible without the leadership of Representative Mike Thompson. However, there is still so much progress to be made, and Californians must reelect him to office this fall. With Representative Mike Thompson leading the charge, we will get a universal background checks bill signed into law and create a better future for generations of Americans to come.
