Though Indiana has enacted a few gun safety policies, it has unacceptably weak gun laws overall. State lawmakers must do more to protect their constituents.
Scorecard Grade
Indiana was one of the earliest states to enact a type of extreme risk protection order law, which allows courts to temporarily suspends individuals’ access to firearms if they demonstrate significant risk of violence or self-harm. In 2024, Indiana had the 16th highest gun death rate among the states. In an average year, 1,215 people die from gun violence in the state. That means that someone dies from gun violence every seven hours. Fifty-eight percent of those deaths are gun suicides, and 38% are gun homicides. In Indiana, the rate of gun deaths increased 36% from 2015 to 2024, compared to a 15% increase nationwide.
