Effective July 1, 2026, no person in Rhode Island shall manufacture, sell, offer to sell, transfer or purchase a “prohibited firearm,” subject to limited exceptions.1 These exceptions include sales to federal firearms dealers and purchases by law enforcement.
The definition of “prohibited firearm” includes:
- semiautomatic shotguns with fixed magazines exceeding 6 rounds;
- semiautomatic rifles with fixed magazines exceeding 10 rounds;
- semiautomatic rifles with the ability to accept detachable magazines, and at least one of a number of military-style features; and
- semiautomatic pistols with fixed magazines exceeding 10 rounds. 2
